The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has urged landlords not to require a deposit or top-up payment from NSFAS-funded students.

This comes just after NSFAS gained experiences about some accommodation providers who need NSFAS-funded students to pay a deposit or top-up payment as a way to get access to the permitted private accommodation.

"NSFAS reminds accommodation vendors on the compulsory conditions, as furnished by the Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement among the non-public accommodation providers and NSFAS funded students," NSFAS mentioned in a press release on Thursday.

The Standardised Fixed-Term Lease Agreement states that the rent is going to be paid regular to the accommodation service provider (lessor) by NSFAS, on behalf with the lessee (NSFAS funded student), in accordance with the NSFAS conditions and terms for personal accommodation suppliers’ participation on the student accommodation portal.

"The lessor may not have to have or permit the lessee to pay for a deposit, top-up payments, or any other types of payment towards the lessor, or every other person in reference to this arrangement, like payment of hire, although awaiting payment from NSFAS. The lessor shall have no recourse from the lessee for any nsfas eligibility criteria default from the payment of rent by NSFAS," the agreement reads.

The NSFAS terms and conditions for private accommodation vendors’ participation on the student accommodation portal also states that: "Where the NSFAS-funded student is defunded due to an incorrect determination by NSFAS, the coed will not be answerable for payment of any arrear rent to your accommodation supplier, up right up until the day of being defunded."

NSFAS described that where the NSFAS-funded student chooses to carry on more info occupying the leased premises, notwithstanding being defunded by NSFAS, the student are going to be liable for payment of rent on the lessor in the date of becoming defunded.
